How Relays Work
A double throw relay combines a normally open and normally closed circuit. A double throw relay is also called a changeover relay, as it alternates, or changes, between two secondary circuits. In this example, when the primary circuit is open, the spring on the secondary side pulls the contactor to terminal B, powering the lamp.

For a switch, NO means that the switch does not have electrical continuity in the shelf state while NC means that the switch does have electrical continuity in the shelf state. In the second NO/NC function, there is the state of the "virtual" switch contact in the PLC logic when the switch is connected to a PLC input card.
Contact UsLatching Vs. non Latching Relay Compared
A non-latching relay, on the other hand, does not store its state when de-energized, like a latching type relay does. Instead, it returns to its original state, which can be normal open or normally closed state. This type of relay requires two signals in to control a circuit; one signal to open the contacts and another to close it.

Contact UsNormally-open and Normally-closed Switch Contacts
Electrical switch contacts are typically classified as either normally-open or normally-closed, referring to the open or closed status of the contacts under "normal" conditions. But what exactly defines "normal" for a switch? The answer is not complex, but is often misunderstood due to the ambiguous nature of the word normal.

Contact UsWhat is a Normally Closed vs Normally Open Switch?
This is where normally open and normally closed contacts come in. Normally Closed vs Normally Open Switch Contacts Normally Open Switch. In a circuit with normally open contacts, electricity doesn''t flow through the circuit until you actuate the switch. So the circuit is open (not complete) when the switch is in its normal, resting state.
Contact UsDo normally closed solid state relays require current to remain closed ...
The term "normally-closed" means that the relay is closed by default, and requires current to open it. If current were required to close the relay, it would be called normally-open, not normally-closed. Internally, these work by using depletion mode MOSFETs instead of enhancement mode ones.
